We pay tribute to the life of our dear friend and neighbour Indu Gwyer, who died on the 20th of September 2023.
Indu and George were married for thirty eight years and came to live in Adelaide Crescent some twenty years ago, after both having overseas development careers in Sudan, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Barbados and the eastern Caribbean.
After their retirement to Sussex, George and Indu enjoyed many travels and activities together. Locally, they often visited many of the flourishing National Trust gardens of southern England. During Covid they accomplished a six month virtual Camino from Vezelay in France to Santiago de Compostela, walking up and down the Hove lawns.
In Summer George and Indu would walk the scenic South Downs, focusing on the finer stretches between Eastbourne and Winchester. Indu was intrigued by the Bloomsbury Group and often visited Charleston and Monk House. In summers, they would swim in the sea from the blue flag beach at Hove lawns. In late November they would head off for India to meet their family and friends there. In March they would return to Sussex in time for the daffodils and magnolias, and so the annual cycle would begin again.
Indu is remembered for her brilliant smile, enchanting laughter, and colourful demeanour.
On the 2nd October, Indu’s ashes were immersed out to sea, a short distance from Adelaide Crescent. Immediately after her ashes were scattered, the sun came out from behind the clouds.
