Garden Plan

New Garden Plan
for Palmeira, Adelaide
and Floral Clock Gardens

Take a look at our new garden plans

This year we launched and got stuck in to a new multi-year plan to renovate and remodel significant parts of the gardens.  Two borders in Adelaide Gardens have been cleared, enlarged and replanted with a variety of perennial plants that will bring colour for many years to come, and a massive 4,600 assorted bulbs have been planted out.

This has included a good number in the small, railed garden above the old sub-station at the bottom of Palmeira Square, which should make a visit to the bins a much more colourful and enjoyable experience next spring!  All of this has been done alongside regular “Clean and Clear” days spent mulching, weeding, pruning, sweeping, and litter-picking to keep everywhere neat and tidy.

Thanks to all our volunteers.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the amazing efforts of our growing band of regular garden volunteers who have worked over 800 hours since March 2024.  It’s also worth mentioning the fabulous compost created by the community composting scheme and used to boost the soil in the two new borders in Adelaide Gardens.  A huge shout out to every volunteer who has turned up to lend a hand to whatever tasks are needed on the day, and to all you community composters out there.

These efforts have been rewarded this year by the highest point score we’ve ever achieved in the Britain in Bloom competition, and equally importantly by the numerous times a passer-by stops to say how they’ve noticed and appreciate the how attractive and well-kept the gardens are looking.

We’ve made a great start on our Garden Plan for Palmeira and Adelaide and are already looking forward to the next phase.  The list for 2025 includes remodelling and extending two flower borders in Palmeira Gardens, creating a wildflower garden and replanting the rose garden in Adelaide Gardens.

2024 Garden Spend

All purchases for this work have been funded by grants secured from the Community Lottery Fund and Pebble Trust and generous donations of money or plants by residents and friends.

4,600 assorted bulbs have been planted out.

Here’s just a small selection of colourful new flowers to look out for next year:.

How can I join in?

The gardens are used by many during the day for relaxing, picnicing and walking, as well as providing a wildlife urban habitat for flora and fauna.

The Friends are working to develop a group of volunteers that meet on a regular basis in the gardens to support Brighton and Hove City Council with gardening activities.
