The results of this year’s South East in Bloom awards have been announced this week and it’s good news for the Friends of Palmeira & Adelaide.
The last three years we have only scored a level 3 (Advancing) so this year we’ve seen a big improvement. We have had a level 4 (Thriving) in previous years, but never a score as high as 81 so a huge congratulations to the whole team of volunteers on this achievement.
The Bloom awards are designed to enhance community spaces, and are the guiding factor by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in how we can improve and set out our green space plans for the coming year.
The scoring gives out the most points for community engagement, so it’s not just about gardening, but a lot about how the garden team and our community has engaged that has helped us achieve this. So a big thank you to everyone, whether that be some time helping out to a donation towards our projects – everything helps.
Would like to help out? We are run by and for, its residents who are all volunteers. There are many smaller groups that members can be involved with, as well as selected to join the committee. If you can spare some time please let us know at info@fopa.co.uk
How is it scored?
The assessors benchmark your achievements in the areas of the core pillars (Community Participation, Environmental Responsibility and Gardening/Conservation Achievement) by considering how much we have already achieved and how much more we could do given your unique circumstances.
The items listed within each section are simply suggestions of things that we could/should be doing for that core pillar; you do not have to be doing all or even most of them to earn a top mark for the section. The assessor needs to gauge how much has already been done against how much could be done by your group and under the conditions present. The assessor will also consider if, in relation to the objectives, you are just starting out (Establishing) or if you have achieved something truly outstanding (Outstanding), or if you are somewhere on the spectrum in between (i.e. Improving, Developing, Thriving).
